Friends, Artists, Scientists, Lend me Your Ears

By Artrit Bytyçi

Friends, writers, scientists, lend me your ears;
I come to ask your support for Kosovo,
a member in UNESCO t’be admitted.
The evils that wars bring live after them;
Yet, good does come with freedom;
So it did with Kosovo. Our noble neighbor
Hath told you Kosovo is ambitious:
If it were so, it was for want of freedom,
And grievously hath Kosovo answer’d for it.
Here, under leave of my neighbors and the rest–
For they are honourable people;
So are they all, all honourable people –
Come I to speak in Kosovo’s behalf.
Kosovo is my country, nurturing and just to me:
But my neighbors say Kosovo is ambitious;
And my neighbors are honourable people.
Kosovo hath championed for dignity,
equity, and freedom for its citizens:
Did this in her seem ambitious?
When communities have asked, Kosovo hath given:
Ambition should be made of sterner stuff:
Yet my neighbors say Kosovo is ambitious;
And my neighbors are honourable people.
You all love when I write about Kosovo,
crumbling castle walls and cobblestone streets,
churches abreast mosques and ruins of old,
all in need of protection: is this ambition?
Yet my neighbors say Kosovo is ambitious;
And, sure, they are honourable people.
I speak not to disprove what my neighbors say,
But here I am to speak what I do know.
You all supported Kosovo once, not without cause:
What cause withholds you then, to vote for her?

On November 9th, 2015 UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) votes whether to admit Kosovo as a member. Two thirds of the votes are needed.
